The One Club for Creativity and The 3% Movement have announced the judges who will serve on the jury for their Next Creative Leaders (NCL) 2021. Five of these judges are from Africa.

NEXT CREATIVE LEADER

Next Creative Leaders is a free portfolio competition that identifies, celebrates and gives a global platform to talented women and non-binary creatives who are making their mark on the world with both their work and a unique point of view. Along with naming 10 global winners based upon the highest scores from judges, The One Club and The 3% Movement also analyse the next level of the highest scoring entrants to recognise those in various regions who may have scored just below the winning level, and whose work and creative vision the judges feel deserve honourable mention accolades.

The international competition of architecture and design “Eurasian Prize” announces the Grand Jury for the 16th season.

In 2021 the works are judged by the 24 experts of worldwide standing in architecture and design

EURASIAN PRIZE

Since 2002, the Eurasian Prize, the architecture and design festival, has been honoring the most prominent works of individuals and businesses who do more than just provide services or sell goods. The festival continues promoting those who aim to make our cities, homes and user experiences better. In addition, the Eurasian Prize connects professionals and firms in architecture and design, providing great networking opportunities and building ties that are meant to last.

The One Club for Creativity has announced the leading creatives from 36 countries who will serve on its most diverse jury ever for the historic ADC 100th Annual Awards, one of the world’s longest running and most prestigious global competitions celebrating excellence in craft and innovation in all forms of design and advertising.

ADC ANNUAL AWARDS

On August 13, 1920 the advertising and design worlds were changed forever with the incorporation of the Art Directors Club of New York, also known as the ADC. Founded by Louis Carl Pedlar with the lofty goal of raising the standards of commercial art to those traditionally associated with fine art, ADC has set the tone for creative excellence that the industry continues to follow a century later.

Africa is known for its bold, unapologetic use of colour. Stories are told in pigments, tones and hues; a kaleidoscope as diverse as the cultures and peoples of the continent. For the initiative Colours of Africa, a collaborative project with Google Arts & Culture, we asked 60 African creatives to capture the unique spirit of their country in a colour which represents home to them.

“For too long … Africa has solved its problems in an emergency,” says Cameroonian architect Hermann Kamte. Africa, he says, is well acquainted with quick-fix solutions and because of this, positive results are often short-lived. But what if we designed for prevention instead, addressing not only current needs but also addressing problems yet to arise?

Hermann Kamte has a simple architectural vision: he wants Africa’s cultural identity to be reflected in its buildings.

QUARTZ AFRICA INNOVATOR

It seems like only yesterday when one of the innovators from our inaugural list, in 2015, warned the audience at a Quartz event in Nairobi that we shouldn’t “fetishize entrepreneurship.” The context was discussing the many programs in Africa designed to support entrepreneurs which didn’t take into account the fundamental challenges of local markets, such as inadequate infrastructure and poor electricity supply

Kamte is an award-winning Cameroonian architect with flair.He founded Hermann Kamte & Associates, an architectural firm that provides design, landscape, education, research and development services.One of his most notable works is the ‘Lagos’ Wooden Tower’ that won him the American Architecture Award as well as the World Architecture Festival and Awards’ inaugural WAFX Prize in 2017, known as the world’s most forward-looking concept. 

Hermann has delivered a speech at The 6th edition of the international LafargeHolcim Award worth $2 million at the Abidjan School of Architecture.

The LafargeHolcim Awards stands out as the world's most significant competition for sustainable design. The criteria of the USD 2 million competition are as challenging as the goal of sustainability itself. The competition is for projects at an advanced stage of design, not finished works.

At 26, Hermann Kamte delivered a keynote speech alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, during the Africa 2018 Forum at Sharm el Sheikh, in Egypt. He was invited to speak about the future of African cities from the perspective of a creative architect. This has been one of his biggest highlights to date and this is the only beginning. Kamte is an award-winning Cameroonian architect with flair.

FORBES AFRICA 30 UNDER 30

Forbes Africa has released its fifth edition of its 30 under 30 list, honouring some of the continent’s most accomplished young artists, entrepreneurs and tech stars. The popular magazine, this year, has released the names of 120 young African game-changers, all under the age of 30, in each of the four sectors – business, technology, creatives and sport.

Cimencam is a subsidiary of the French construction materials group Lafarge. It produces and sells cement, aggregates and ready-mixed concrete in Cameroon. It includes three factories: a grinding station located in Bonabéri on the banks of the Wouri River in Douala, an integrated cement plant in Figuil in the Northern region and a concrete plant located in Olembé in Central Cameroon.

The Brand, At HKA we work with very different materials because each project is influenced by its context, however I have developed a special attraction to wooden architecture. Coming from Cameroon, where we have the second largest forest in Africa, this abundant resource is freely offered by nature and an alternative to our urban reliance on artifi cial materials.

World Architecture Festival (WAF) has revealed the 2018 winner of its inaugural Water Research Prize, supported by WAF founder partner GROHE: an innovative, community led water management system, designed by a team of students from Pontificia Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) which captures, stores, and treats rainwater and inserts it into pre-existing water networks.

The Architecture press release has launched International Award For Sustainable Architecture AWARDS 2018  (IASA 2018) the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best architecture and products.

Ikory is a city situated in the heart of Lagos Nigeria in the most popular and opulent residential hub; it is here that a unique wooden structure sands tall overlooking the city. 

Hermann Kamte is an award-winning architect whose design philosophy looks to the past and present to make cities for the future. Now Internationally recognised, his work, he says, is a meeting point between theory and practice. It's an overlap that allows the architect to work with current contraints and strengths without limiting his possibilites. 

Concept plans have been revealed for the first wooden skyscraper in Africa. Cameroon-based Hermann Kamte & Associates has taken the wraps offits design for an 87-metre tower in Lagos which would be constructed on top of an existing concrete structure. These mixed residential spaces will accommodate one-, two-, three- and four-bed apartments that are shaded by a stylised wooden envelope, complete with symbols reflecting Nigerian Yoruba heritage.

WAF RESEARCH PROGRAM

The WAF Research Programme has been launched to promote the ideas highlighted in the WAFX Manifesto, which identified key challenges architects will need to address in the coming years ...The first of these categories open for entries is WATER, supported by WAF headline partner GROHE. GROHE are supporting research, with the winning initiative awarded £10,000 of funding.

EAMAU | GRAND JURY 2018

L'École africaine des métiers de l'architecture et de l'urbanisme (EAMAU) is a higher education establishment located in Lomé, Togo.

The project focuses on the open area. This is an experimental tall wooden structure in Lagos. The apartments are designed around a central core. Building is divided in 4 parts. The existing structure and new are separated by sky gardens and amenities. The top roof consists of 360-degree restaurants and lush greenery. Sky gardens also contribute in social gathering between users.

Concrete: we can’t live with it, can’t live without it. A combination of cement, water and ground rock or sand, on the surface concrete might seem crushingly mundane. Yet it has defined construction in recent centuries and with it, in part, modernity. But do we need to re-evaluate our concrete habit for our sakes and the planet’s? Production of cement is disastrous for our biosphere, while the degradation of many concrete buildings has some construction experts predicting a colossal headache in the future.

Timber, one of the oldest building materials known to man, is the inspiration for a new London exhibition. Called Timber Rising, the exhibition is collaboratively curated by Studio Woode and Clare Farrow, a journalist who focuses on the intersection between the built world, sustainability and innovation.

INSPIRELI AWARDS

Inspireli Awards is the largest international architecture competition enabling new talents to tell their stories and raise awareness about their own world view before they get their chance to build it. It brings together up-and-coming design and architecture students or recent graduates, as well as established professionals, and provides them a forum to connect to the general public.

Africa's first  proposed  wooden high-rise  is  a  mixed-use condominium consisting  residential  spaces,  sporting facilities, sky gardens and a carpark. The  87-metre  tall  Lagos  Wooden Tower is designed by Hermann Kamte, an  architect  from  Cameroon.  It  aims to  improve  the  urban  conditions  of the  residents  living  in  the  Nigerian city.  It  also  addresses  the  problem  of poorly-planned  construction  in  many African cities by pushing the boundaries of  contemporary

“Having a space that has the possibility of impacting and transforming people, society and everyday life is highly beneficial. The selected speakers come from all over the world and share their experiences around the important and urgent thematic on the shaping of society. It is one of the few intellectual platforms that really allow the meeting between practitioners and lovers of Architecture or the arts.”

Previously Africa’s largest water body in the Sahel region, Lake Chad has lost its glory and is facing extinction since 1963 when its size shrunk from 26,000 square kilometres to 1,350 square kilometres by 2001. It lost about 95% of its size to inefficient damming and irrigation methods thereby affecting the over 30 million people in Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria who depend on the water body as their major source of water.

Rising 26 storeys above the bustle of Lagos, Abebe Court Tower's geometric façade of light wood separated by belts of lush green stands out from the drab concrete that dominates Nigeria's commercial centre. Or at least it would, if it were built.

Since 2003, The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards is an award program for unbuilt or incomplete projects spanning across eight categories. It is organised and awarded annually by the MIPIM (Le marché international des professionnels de l’immobilier), the international property market in Cannes, France, in cooperation with the monthly international magazine Architectural Review. Since 2002, the awards have been presented at MIPIM.

L’agence camerounaise Hermann Kamte&Associates répond à ces questions avec le projet d’une tour résidentielle en bois de plus de 40 000 m² dans le centre-ville de Lagos. Designed    and    conceptualised    by    Cameroonian Architecture  Firm,  Hermann  Kamte  &  Associates,  the proposed  addition  to  Nigeria’s  capital  recently  won  an American  Architecture  Prize,  as  well  as  the  inaugural World  Architecture  Festival  award's  inaugural  WAFX prize.  A  unique  wooden  structure  that  is  designed  to be  a  smart  and  sustainable  building,  the  experimental residential  building  represents  an  alternative  to  the massive concrete buildings that dominate the city. 

Au coeur du continent africain, le lac Tchad est en train de s'assécher. Un architecte camerounais propose une île artificielle innovante, qui fait office d'usine de désalinisation pour remplir le lac avec l'eau de l'océan.

Designed as part of an international competition in 2016, Kamte said of the Lagos tower: ‘Our first goal was to build a new approach to urbanisation and population growth. Our second goal was to incorporate Lagos’s extraordinary cultural diversity. Our final goal was to introduce the concept of wood construction into a landscape dominated by concrete buildings.

TIMBER RISING: VERTICAL VISIONS FOR THE CITIES OF TOMORROW

"Timber Rising" focuses on the most significant mass timber solutions to date, interviewing key participants, and looking to a future where wood will ultimately determine new types of structures. Examples of completed projects will sit alongside more ambitious concept and research proposals, showing what is possible today, and what will be possible - with changing building codes and new thinking by developers, governments and the construction industry - for the cities of tomorrow.

‘Timber Rising: Vertical Visions for the Cities of Tomorrow’, which runs till 19 May, features live projects like Waugh Thistleton’s Dalston Lane apartment block in London – the world’s biggest CLT building to date – and proposals such as Michael Green Architects’ Parisian tower.

Exhibition called Timber Rising - Vertical Visions for the Cities of Tomorrow. The exhibition, which opens at the Roca London Gallery on 9 February, is the first comprehensive look at the revolution in timber high-rise building, and features both new structures and architectural renderings from Britain, Nigeria, Norway, Sweden, France and elsewhere.

Hermann Kamte, young Cameroonian architect and the founder of company Hermann Kamte & Associates (HKA), is the driving force behind the famous sketch of Lagos Wooden Tower. Originally designed as a submission for Metsä Wood’s City Above the City competition, Kamte’s design looks to tackle the problem of poorly planned construction in many African cities by pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture.

PIXA is a flexible and modular structure which can be easily assembled to create a tiny and large structure by replication using a single unit. The Interior space of the steel structure is defined by two abstract natural elements “light and shade”.

For any city that’s full to capacity with concrete and glass buildings, Lagos’ Wooden Tower by Cameroonian architecture firm Hermann Kamte & Associates (pictured) points to an innovative future using natural, recyclable and local wooden materials for construction. The buzz about building with engineered timber is spreading. In Lagos, Nigeria, Hermann Kamte proposes a timber extension of 22 floors on top of an existing four-storey building. He intends to show “how the roofs of today can be transformed into the plots of tomorrow”.

Bagging first prize at Rethinking The Future Awards 2017 and a finalist at the World Architecture Festival 2017, this proposed sustainable design will be situated in the heart of Ikory in Lagos, Nigeria’s wealthiest residential suburb.

Hermann Kamte & Associates (HKA) recently unveiled their plans for a striking wooden tower in Lagos as part of the City above the City competition (Plan B), an international initiative created by Metsä Wood, which challenges architects and designers to explore alternative uses of wood in the urban context.

Rethinking The Future (RTF) was born from the idea of creating a new window on international trends in architecture and design that looks on to the solutions for the need of the era i.e., Climate Change.

RTF is a hub of services for architecture and design. RTF is working to develop an architectural language that would ‘sustain’ and ‘survive’ the impacts of climate change taking sustainability one step ahead.

The World Architecture Festival has announced the shortlist for their 2017 awards slate, featuring 434 projects ranging from small family homes, to schools, stations, museums, large infrastructure and landscape projects. Cameroonian architecture firm, Hermann Kamte & Associates are planning to develop 'The Native Skyscraper' -- a stunning wooden sky scraper with a design inspired by Africa's iconic Baobab trees. With growing urban populations, architects are tasked with finding sustainable solutions for cities attempting to address urban growth while simultaneously reducing their environmental footprint. 

Cameroonian architect Hermann Kamte is looking at ways to save the lake from drying out. According to his firm, the disappearance of the lake would impact over nine million people nearby, and indirectly, 30 million people in the region.

cameroonian architect hermann kamte incorporates his love of philosophy in his latest ‘regeneration of the lake chad’ project. having observed the ecosystem’s patterns, kamte deduced that ecological catastrophes have resulted in the disappearance of fauna and flora and will soon dry out the lakes of the sahara desert. 

Proposed by Cameroonian architect Hermann Kamte with the intention of softening the predominantly concrete cityscape of Lagos. The load-bearing structure is composed of laminated veneer lumber, and rises above an existing four-storey residential building. 

The Hedranawe clinic is intended to guarantee fluidity and a seamless spatial interrelationship between its main functions. It will be a safe environment for patients, medical team and other users and workers.

New materials continue to stimulate innovations in skyscraper design. The development of laminated timber has facilitated the construction of unprecedentedly tall wooden buildings, culminating – so far – in an 18-storey student residence at the University of British Columbia, completed last year.This 21-storey residential tower, proposed by Cameroonian architect Hermann Kamte with the intention of softening the predominantly concrete cityscape of Lagos

This green-roofed wooden tower planned for Lagos features a perforated envelope inspired by indigenous cultures of the area. Hermann Kamte & Associates designed the experimental structure as an alternative to the massive concrete buildings that dominate the city. By contrast, the wooden tower emphasizes passive design principles that marry indoor and outdoor living.

Often overlooked in favour of glass, steel and concrete, wood is now being used in unexpected places including skyscrapers. Patrick Kingsland spoke to Cameroonian architect Hermann Kamte about his plans to build a wooden tower in the heart of Nigeria’s capital, Lagos.

Hermann  KAMTE  est  un  jeune  architecte  camerounais  et  autodidacte passionné de culture générale. Né à Yaoundé en 1992, en 2010 il déménage à Ngaoundéré pour étudier les sciences physiques. En 2011, il commence à Lomé (Togo) des études en architecture.
